Imagine if your Granny has gone mad in a paint store and that's the feel of The Porches. The hotel describes its design philosophy as "industrial granny chic" which seems odd but is fitting.
The exterior has remained the same, but each home has been updated with a wash of dark but intense colors, such as cinnamon, evergreen and mustard yellow. The feeling is one of the outdoors brought inside in the entranceway of each building, the interior wall is actually the exterior siding of the adjacent building. The buildings were joined via a long porch lined with rocking chairs, and the space between the buildings is bridged with skylights.

The inn is a series of six 1890s row houses, which were once the residences of mill workers. Like other former mill towns, such as Lawrence and Lowell, for much of the last half of the 20th century, North Adams was a bleak place to be, with high crime and dilapidated rows of factories occupying entire city blocks.
